Artist’s Musings

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood to work on an old painting

This is another painting that has been in storage and out of storage. I have been replaying in my mind how I would like to finish this piece. Shall I make broad brush strokes or minute brush works? I like the apparent sense of haphazard brush work like a rough sketch, but this one seems to be calling for something less sketchy looking.

Anyway, composition is queen in any work. Everything has a rhythm. Even your walk! In a painting it can be a visual rhythm—3 beats, 4 beats, or 8 beats—leading or causing your eyes to “read” the painting in rapidness or gentleness. I can see such rhythms in most abstracts and non-abstract works of art. They are fun to lookout for.

My family is quite musically inclined, especially my eldest brother who is a classical guitarist, so analogies along the likes of music are easy to imagine.

Anyway, this one has been in progress since two or three summers ago. It is an ongoing study. It could end up as some of the other paintings have — scrapped down and painted over. it is only paint. But I will pursue this one to see how it will evolve because I am beginning to like it more than a few years ago. I like its rhythm and I like how it reads.
